Thousands of Welsh businesses to benefit from broadband expansions

Thousands of businesses and homes in Wales are set to benefit from BT's expansion of a super-fast broadband network.

The telecommunications firm is targeting upwards of 32,000 premises in the roll-out of its fibre services, taking the number of homes and companies being passed by the new super-fast network in Wales to 475,000 when the upgrades are completed during the next year.

Those considering installing a 10mb leased line could be interested to learn that BT is hoping to make such networks accessible to two thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014, but the latest focus in on expansion within Wales.

Ann Beynon, BT director for the region commented: “This latest major investment is a tremendous boost for Wales.

“It’s going to provide a huge fillip for businesses and the country’s economy. At a stroke, small and medium sized firms will have access to big business speeds at much lower costs allowing them to find new markets, boost their competitiveness and create new jobs.”

She added that flexible and remote working could receive a particular boost from the faster network speeds, which in turn can help to lower office overheads and improve the work-life balance of employees.

Meanwhile, Roy Bichan, chairman of the North Wales Economic Forum, welcomed the news, adding that he looks forward to a time when “this vital part of our communications infrastructure is available”.

He elaborated: “Access to fast broadband is absolutely vital for local firms and households. It gives businesses a competitive edge in today’s crowded marketplace and provides access to new markets with the potential of new jobs.”
