VoIP support on the rise

VoIP and video calling solutions are receiving an increasing level of support, with a Skype receiving releases on a growing number of platforms.

Skype – one of the most popular VoIP provider – is now available in version 2.1 on at least 17 additional Android devices. Samsung, HTC and Sony Ericson gadgets are among those that will now support the technology.

The VoIP software is now also available in an optimised for Mac version. Skype 5.3 for Mac OS X is not only compatible with Lion, but will also work with every version of Apple's operating system back to Leopard. The company explained in a post: "With Skype 5.3 for Mac OS X, you'll also be able to send and receive HD quality video when talking to your friends and family.

"To receive clear HD video calls on your Mac, we recommend an upload/download speed of 1.5Mbps."

Even the iPad2 is catered for, with a free Skype app for both 3G and Wi-Fi on offer. It is hoped that the changes will deliver a more integrated and 'Mac-like' service.

As the use of VoIP becomes increasingly common among consumers, an increase in consumer bandwidth use is likely to follow. In order to negotiate this businesses will need to look into checking their network connections to ensure they are up to the task. Furthermore, a leased line might be required if firms want to benefit from VoIP technology themselves.

The software can provide a useful way of communicating with people in different towns and countries and a substantially lower rate than traditional telecommunication options. But a good connection is required to ensure that the service runs smoothly.
