VoIP offers clear business benefits

There are clear benefits to businesses from implementing Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.

This is according to recent comments from David Meintjes, managing director of Connection Telecom. Speaking to IT News Africa, Mr Meintjes highlighted the fact that VoIP not only cuts costs but also “improves efficiency and enhances business processes”.

He added that the recent development of a viable means of hosting VoIP infrastructure through cloud computing has allowed an increasing number of companies to benefit from the solution. This is due to the removal of additional costs involved in individual firms running and owning the technology.

VoIP is particularly useful when it comes to improving on business efficiencies. The service can help to create a common environment where colleagues can communicate and collaborate, even if they are in different offices of countries. Instant messaging and video calling are just two ways in which this service can improve communications and efficiencies by making it easier to share knowledge and information.

However, in order to implement VoIP through the cloud effectively, it is worth looking at the condition of the business network and perhaps considering a leased line or MPLS network. This will increase the reliability and performance of the service.

This can also be of benefit when it comes to cloud computing in other areas. For example, any changes to office location are less problematic due to the lack of on site servers. This means that there is no interruption to service and employees using the same servers from a different location will not have their work interrupted. Similarly, security is no longer the concern of the company as this is also usually outsourced to become the concern of the provider.

As more and more services are outsourced in this manner, organisations will see their IT costs start to decline. Long-distance phone calls will no longer cost a fortune thanks to VoIP, while the network and systems that need to be maintained on site will be significantly simplified.
