VoIP creating demand for managed service providers

The growth in the use of VoIP is creating more demand for managed service providers (MSP), according to a new report from Infonetics Research.

According to the research report, MSPs can expect the number of seats for hosted VoIP and unified communications services to more than double between 2012 and 2016. Although VoIP is obviously not a new technology anymore, it is still presenting a growing demand for support as uptake increases amongst small and medium-sized businesses.

Further findings from the report reveal that global service provider revenue from business and residential VoIP services reached $58 billion in 2011, up 16 per cent from 2010. The research concludes that “these figures show no trend of slowing in the VoIP market”.

The report highlights that as VoIP continues to grow, so does the demand from businesses for reliable services with no downtime.

Writing for eChannelLine, Mike Byrne, Director of MSP, Quest Software, said, “MSPs can capitalise on this trend by offering VoIP monitoring as a standard IT service as part of a client's ongoing monthly retainer. By monitoring VoIP systems, MSPs have an opportunity to deliver a value-added service and boost recurring revenue.”

He added, “MSPs have an opportunity. They can deliver support for servers, networks and they can offer VoIP support in a reseller and service management role. MSPs can even be stickier and use VoIP management as a stepping stone to selling a managed service contract, a great chance to upsell.”

Byrne’s article for eChannelLine also notes that events such as the Olympics will create the need for support from MSPs. During the Olympics, internet connections are expected to be strained as people use up bandwidth by streaming events online. Byrne says, “MSPs can present a solution to clients to solve a streaming performance problem, specifically with the reporting and alert systems that can be set up to monitor for these specific high-peak times.”
