Startup businesses urged to use VoIP

Startup firms have been strongly urged to try using VoIP technology, which stands for voice over internet protocol.

It’s ideal for small businesses on a budget because it allows them to make calls using the internet, either for free or for a small monthly fee. Writing for Business2Community, Leiden Johnson, a freelancer herself, describes VoIP as a “game changer”.

She explains, “VoIP... is a better technological alternative to traditional phone lines when it comes to all the things that it can do. Through a reputable provider, anyone can make long distance calls, both national and international, using the internet. This VoIP service allows businesses, even small ones, to send an internet fax, have a virtual pbx system, or even have [freephone] numbers.”

She notes that VoIP services can also be heavily customised to meet individual needs. For example, businesses can either make calls computer to computer, via an IP phone or using an analogue telephone adaptor.

The set-up costs are minimal – at the most basic level you’ll just need a computer but you may also consider a web cam (although they’re now built in on many laptops) and a microphone for the clearest calls.

Businesses that are relying heavily on VoIP often choose to use IP phones for a professional look and feel and for ease of use but these devices are not expensive. In some cases, by downloading some software, you can even use your existing analogue phone as a VoIP phone. In all scenarios you will need a good broadband connection for VoIP to work. Leased lines can be a solution for those who are struggling to obtain fast internet connections.

Leiden Johnson writes, “The VoIP technology is a game changer for the telecom industry, and the many businesses who rely on phones for communication.”
