New figures from Microsoft have revealed that Skype, the popular VoIP service, is now used for over 2 billion minutes every day.
Skype is now an extremely popular business tool as well as being used by social consumers worldwide every day. Microsoft has calculated that the collective 2 billion minutes per day that users spend on Skype is the time equivalent of 225,000 trips to the moon and back, 5,400 return journeys to Mars or walking around the Earth 845 times. It’s also enough time to watch 1.6 million films.
Two billion minutes is 33 million hours, 1,388,000 days, 3,805 years or almost 38 centuries spent on the VoIP service. A post on the Skype blog notes that the service is used by a diverse range of people, and is being accessed by a variety of devices, including PCs, iPhones, iPads, Kindle Fires, Androids, Macs, Windows Phones and even TVs.
Skype’s blog post says, “2 billion minutes is a testament to our users who are making Skype the everyday communications hub that brings people together. This massive amount of connection is also a testament to the hard work of our product teams who have enabled these great experiences.”
It adds, “But we’re not done yet! We’re constantly looking for even more ways for people to connect and share – from the living room to the boardroom, on the go, anytime, anywhere.”
Reports say that Microsoft is set to integrate Skype with Lync, its enterprise communications platform and this will further blur the distinctions between consumer and business communication.
Giovanni Mezgec, general manager of Lync, has been quoted as saying, “By bringing the assets that we have on the consumer front with Skype and on the enterprise front with Lync, we can have a unified platform that really brings communications from the living room to the boardroom in a way that makes sense and is rationalised and connected rather than having disconnected islands.”
