IP communications offer easier implementation path

Businesses choosing to install IP communications in the form of mobile VoIP will find that the service offers a number of benefits.

Amy Cravens, senior analyst at In-Stat, explained that mobile VoIP offers users an easier implementation path, better indoor coverage than traditional cell phones and access to cheaper international long-distance calls. The comments follow research from the firm, which revealed that business mobile VoIP users will increase tenfold over the next five years, with IP PBX users accounting for the majority of these IP communications.

Mobile VoIP allows IP-based calls to be made from a mobile handset, facilitating the travel of voice traffic over an available broadband connection. The service is available in both the consumer and business sectors, but its benefits are only recently being picked up and implemented in the business environment.

In-Stat’s research, The Business of Mobile VoIP: IP Voice Communications in the Enterprise, also found that IP PBX users will make up the majority of business mobile VoIP usage. Furthermore, the paper identified a potential to use VoIP over Wi-Fi hotspots in order to make the service more mobile, rather than residential or business-based.

The report follows the publication of research from Eastern Management Group, which found that SIP trunks are becoming particularly popular with people considering VoIP services. Last year, SIP trunks were installed on 45 per cent of new IP PBX systems, with one third of these newly enabled systems now sending 90 per cent of their traffic over the SIP trunk.

In addition, around a third of new PBXs are 90 to 100 per cent equipped with SIP phones, with Softphones in use on 40 per cent of these new exchanges and Microsoft-owned Skype employed to a degree on around a quarter of new systems.

Businesses implementing a company IP PBX and SIP trunk solution, should look at setting up a leased line and MPLS network so they can efficiently optimise their voice traffic.
