The demand for business VoIP services is growing fast and is predicted to reach $20.8 billion by 2018, a new global report has found.

The research from GIA found that this “robust demand” is mainly being driven by the need for mobile VoIP services and rapid adoption amongst small and medium-sized businesses. Cheaper hardware and software prices and growing VoIP markets in Asia-Pacific are also positive for the industry, the analysis finds.

A spokesperson for GIA said, “In this age of cut-throat competition, where companies are increasingly compelled to extend their reach beyond geographic boundaries, the need to establish communications with a wide range of internal and external business partners, including customers, suppliers, distributors and employees becomes critical.”

They added, “This brings to the fore, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which as a technology is fast replacing traditional PSTN-based voice communication services...at significantly lesser costs.”

The report – entitled Business VoIP Services: A Global Strategic Business Report - forecasts that the demand for mobile VoIP services will continue to grow in the coming years, thanks to an increasingly mobile workforce and the need for staff to be able to work on the move and consistently stay in touch with headquarters.

The analysis also finds that the ability of VoIP technology to enhance productivity is a driving force behind its growth. It states that, “Business VoIP features and capabilities such as desk calling, automated attendant, extension management, follow me/gather me, outlook integration, remote office, unified mutter mail, voicemail, call record, conference calling, and video conference, allow companies to leverage the power of seamless and uninterrupted connectivity among employees and with external business partners, to realise overall productivity enhancements within organisations.”
