BT launches new same-number VoIP tool

A new service from BT will allow VoIP users to keep their primary phone number for use with all their devices.

The new BT Voice tool will allow customers to use the same number for their home or work hone and all their mobile and VoIP-enabled devices. The service is being rolled out after being developed off the back of BT's acquisitions from its takeover of Ribbit in 2008.

Speaking to Information Age, BT Voice's programme director, Martin Rolls, said that the new breakthrough will be very beneficial to VoIP users: "Day to day they are in different buildings, sometimes mobile, sometimes fixed. Having a single number that is accessible from wherever you are is a very important thing."

Any VoIP handsets that support the protocol standard will be able to offer users the service, as well as all Android, Apple and BlackBerry devices. Mobile workers have fund the technology particularly appealing, explained Mr Rolls, who added that BT has already deployed the tool for its own staff and that those who do not work at their desks all day benefited the most.

The technology, although not yet priced, is expected to be available within four weeks, according to BT.
Previous analysis of the market for VoIP services shows that BT is not likely to struggle to find takers for its new tool, as the number of people using VoIP between now and 2015 is expected to grow significantly in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

BT claims that the service will help it to reduce its mobile telephony costs, which it admits are "fairly significant" at the moment. As a result, it is likely to that many other businesses will catch on the benefits of the tool as well.
