Awareness of VoIP on the up across UK
According to a new report from Ofcom, the number of consumers who are aware of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology has risen, but actual user numbers remain fairly low.
The report, entitled ‘The Consumer Experience of 2012,’ took into account around 2,000 consumer opinions and experiences of the telecommunications industry.
It found that 78 per cent of consumers surveyed were aware of the VoIP technology, an increase from the 75 per cent who were aware of it in the previous year.
However, despite high awareness rates, the report also found that just 35 per cent of consumers had access to the service in their own homes. Just 29 per cent of consumers surveyed reported that they were making use of the VoIP technology.
The report also found that younger consumers were pushing user numbers up, with a further seven per cent tipped to begin using the service over the coming two years.
The Ofcom report highlighted some of the reasons behind the low usage figures, including the popularity of fixed landlines in properties.
The number of landlines in UK homes remains far higher - with 84 per cent of people having one - than in other countries, the vast majority of which saw a significant decrease in the number of people opting not to have a landline phone in their homes.
Seventy-nine per cent of people living in Britain still have both a landline and a mobile phone, the report found, whilst 15 per cent have just a mobile phone, and just five per cent used only a landline phone.
