Small businesses are continuing to put their security at risk by not following best practises when it comes to virtualisation.

This is according to a recent study conducted by Symantec Corp, which revealed that 78 per cent of small businesses do not have antivirus programs installed on their virtual servers. With an increasing number of firms looking at moving towards virtualisation, many might want to consider the security issue earlier rather than later.

Symantec looked at 658 respondents in 28 countries across North America, Asia Pacific, Latin America and the EMEA region. They found that of those polled, 70 per cent were considering virtualisation.

While urging companies to make sure security was high on their list of considerations, Steve Cullen, senior vice-president of strategy and marketing at Symantec, did remark that an increasing number of smaller companies are looking into virtualisation.

“Despite what you may think, small businesses are evaluating how virtualisation can benefit their organisations. We're still early in the adoption cycle, but virtualisation enables small businesses to reduce expenses and meet the increasing demands for greater productivity and efficiency,” he stated.

Financial benefits were revealed as the main reason behind smaller firms being keen to look into virtualisation, with 68 per cent of those questioned stating that reduced operating expenses would drive their decisions. However, the ability to use fewer servers for the same number of applications was cited as a benefit by 67 per cent and 65 per cent were drawn by the idea of improved server scalability.

However, firms might want to look into managed networks since many companies suggested that limited IT skills are holding them back. Indeed, nearly a third of those surveyed stated that a lack of experience was a factor in why they are not planning a move towards virtualisation at the moment.
