UK needs FTTC to catch up with European connection speeds

The introduction and roll-out of more 'fibre-to-the-cabinet' (FTTC) networks in the UK will help to push the UK to become one of the speedier nations in Europe when it comes to broadband connections.

This is according to a new report from Akamai Technologies, whose State of the Internet Report showed that the UK is currently only 16th in the continent as far as internet speeds go. The report’s authors claim that there are understandable fears about the UK falling behind the rest of the EU. British businesses are also at risk of falling behind competitors elsewhere in Europe, where faster connections are available.

One of the authors of the report, David Belson explained that the roll-out of fibre optic broadband to more homes is needed and could go a long way to bringing the UK up to speed. However, he added that these new faster services would also have to be priced keenly to ensure as many businesses and household users could take advantage of the new connections.

Mr Belson said, "If the fibre is there, but the services marketed towards subscribers are not priced at affordable levels, then the UK will struggle to move ahead. Note that this is true for any country - not just the UK."

The report also highlighted the fact that Asian countries, particularly Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong have a major advantage over the UK when it comes to broadband speeds.
