UK Broadband launched 4G network in Southwark

Businesses in the London Borough of Southwark are enjoying new 4G broadband connections, thanks to new services from wireless provider, UK Broadband.

The service is built on a Time Division Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) solution provided by Huawei in China, which was developed in response to the growing demand for data in the growth economy.

The service assigns bandwidth to each connection according to the specific user requirements. This means that all the available spectrum is used, which works efficiently in light of the fact that nine times more data is downloaded than uploaded, explained UK Broadband’s chief executive officer, Nicholas James.

The main service being offered by UK Broadband is extra capacity when a UK mobile operator’s network capacity starts to struggle under the strain of data and voice call demand. Mr James explained, “The amount of data is expected to increase 25 times over the next five years.

“Ofcom has predicted that, even after the 4G spectrum, the UK's mobile operators will only have enough to last them a couple of years before their networks are full again.”

He added that the increased mobile workforce, e-health, CCTV and traffic lights are just a small example of the uses for the data once the technology is available. “All these kinds of things are not being served at all in the mobile world at the moment, but once the technology is available you're going to see huge growth,” added James.

ABI research, meanwhile, predicted earlier in 2012, that half of base stations around the world will have upgraded to TD-LTE as standard by 2016.
