UC growth to prompt greater need for managed networks?

Businesses could see their need for managed networks grow over the course of the next year as recent research suggests that unified communications (UC) projects will expand during 2012.

Compiled by IDC, the paper suggested that UC projects involving video, mobility and collaboration are likely to be among the main stars of the next 12 months, as companies and organisations begin to see past the obvious benefits of the system.

Rich Costello, senior research analyst for UC and enterprise communications infrastructure at ICD, suggested that this year the sector is likely to start to overcome the economic dampener that held things back in 2011.

He added: “There seems to be a lot of discussion in 2011, in particular around those things as key drivers for UC, and obviously beyond 2011. We’re looking at the next phase of deployments for UC beyond the basic stuff like IP telephony, instant messaging, unified messaging.”

Meanwhile, Blair Pleasant, president and principal analyst at COMMfusion, stated that companies are starting to subsume UC into collaboration, prompting a new way of conducting work and communications.

This is also starting to trickle through to the mobile aspect of communications, as people bring in their own devices to the office and companies start to consider the cloud and similar solutions to allow employees to access their work from alternative locations.

Expanding a business's communication system can deliver a great number of benefits to the workforce and is also likely to improve efficiency around a company.
