The latest TechWatch report from technology and networking firm Cisco has found that 76 per cent of companies across Britain and Ireland are keen to make changes to their technological and communications set-up over the coming three years, basing those changes around the most efficient use of resources and skills.

The report also found that 15 per cent of firms of all sizes had already put structural changes in place, enabling easier and more cost-effective flexible working and more reliable communications between office-based staff and those based at home.

Cisco UK and Ireland chief technology officer, Ian Foddering, confirmed that the main themes that had been generated from the research – which surveyed more than 500 firms across Britain and Ireland in the small, medium-sized and large company categories – were simplifying IT processes, the protection of assets and the network as a whole, and the ability to grow and change as time went on.

Almost half - 48 per cent - of companies surveyed reported that the most pressing concern over the coming year was the increase of security threats relating to their IT systems. Other firms suggested that their main challenge would be the performance of their existing IT set-up to cope as the business grows.

Meanwhile, related research from communications giant Vodafone found that employers across the country could save up to £34 billion by encouraging staff to work from home, thus freeing up desk space and dramatically reducing overheads.

Jeroen Hoencamp, enterprise director at Vodafone UK, said that businesses across the UK were not making the most of flexible working: "We need to get Britain working smarter and thinking about different ways of working.

"A potential saving of up to £34 billion is staggering and this research reveals businesses are underestimating the savings they can make through reducing the number of desks they have."
