South Oxfordshire to benefit from new superfast broadband

The vast majority – 95 per cent – of businesses and homes across South Oxfordshire will now have access to superfast broadband as a result of a new £1 million funding injection.

South Oxfordshire District Council has confirmed it is to invest £1 million into the installation of the service as part of the £25 million Better Broadband for Oxfordshire partnership with BT. The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK will then match the sum, the council said.

Currently, just 53 per cent of businesses and homes in the area are able to make use of superfast broadband. The Better Broadband for Oxfordshire – which was launched in August of last year – aims to see 90 per cent of the country accessing broadband speeds of least 24 megabits per second by the end of 2015. The district council will now consider making a further injection of funding to see the remaining five per cent of the area provided with good coverage.

Cabinet member for economic development, property and technical services, Judith Nimmo-Smith, told the Henley Standard: “We are well aware that many residents and businesses in South Oxfordshire currently experience slow broadband speeds.

"The Better Broadband for Oxfordshire Project really set the ball rolling to address this and will provide a massive boost across the county.

“We were, however, very keen to ensure that we wouldn’t end up leaving small pockets of the community at a disadvantage. Our £1 million investment, together with the BDUK match-funding, extends the reach of superfast broadband in South Oxfordshire that little bit further, making a big difference to many people across the district.”
