Online businesses 'flourish' in the North
Online businesses are flourishing in the North of England, with Manchester dubbed the UK's top small business online hotspot.
Research conducted by eBay revealed that Manchester is the most active region for small businesses online, with West Yorkshire and Lancashire also ranking near the top of the survey's 'Digital Density' ladder.
The rank was determined by the volume of small online businesses operating in a region, along with their sales as a proportion of the local population.
A spokesperson for eBay commented on the findings: “Our research shows that technology is opening up tremendous opportunities for small businesses across the UK, with digital clusters spread across the country, particularly in the North West.”
He added that the region's history in terms of successful universities, strong sports teams and great culture makes it attractive options for entrepreneurs. This is what is thought to be driving the North West's start-up culture, along with the essential improvements in infrastructure in the region.
John Allan, national chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses, agreed that further investment in digital infrastructure has been a strong driving force behind the trend, adding that improved access to finance and comparably low running costs have also helped drive the emergence of the North West's “digital hubs”.
The report comes as research from TUC claims that London is creating jobs at a particularly high rate in comparison with other towns in the South West. TUC suggested that further investment is needed in supportive infrastructure across the UK, rather than just in the capital.
While eBay's findings indicate that other regions are still managing to create wealth and new business, access to fast broadband speeds is an essential point for businesses anywhere in the UK.
