Digital technology grows in importance for global business, expert finds

The importance of digital technology to businesses located across the globe will only continue to grow, according to an expert.

The executive director of Digital Northern Ireland 2020 (DNI 2020), Dr Sinclair Stockman, revealed that, whilst technology was already of ‘fundamental importance’ to businesses of all sizes and across all sectors today, it would become even more so in the near future.

Technology in all its forms – from social networking to communications such as VoIP and email – will soon have an ‘even bigger impact’ on how global organisations operate throughout the coming years. “Digital communication technology is one of the key transformational drivers of the economy and society in the 21st century, but too many businesses don’t understand how this technology can make a difference to their company,” Dr Stockman told the Ballymena Times.

As many organisations do not understand the full extent of the need to focus on technology and honing its use for the good of the firm, carrying out a detailed technology and communications assessment of a business could be crucial. Ensuring that staff are fully trained and the necessary equipment is in place is essential to harnessing solid business practice in the arena, the expert went on to suggest.

"Collectively we want businesses to be more technology aware and understand how it can help them make a tremendous difference to their business. Digital communication technology can and will transform our local economy and our society, but the companies that exploit our digital platform will be the first to benefit," Dr Stockman went on to say.
