Broadband speeds becoming more important to house buyers

Good internet connectivity is more appealing to house buyers than other amenities, such as off-street parking, it has been revealed.

The research, carried out by property expert Henry Pryor found that one in five house-hunters now checks what broadband speed is available to a property before putting an offer in. In addition, the survey found that ten per cent had decided against buying a house they liked due to slow connectivity.

Miles Shipside, director at real estate site Rightmove, said that internet connectivity is becoming an increasingly important factor for house buyers. He told property-abroad.com: “In this digital age, a fast broadband connection is becoming more and more important… people don’t just rely on a good internet connection for browsing the web, but also television, entertainment and working from home."

When people have bought a property, research suggests that getting their internet up and running is more of a priority for around 20 per cent of people, than setting up their gas supply or TV.

The Henry Pryor study gathered its findings by trialling a property advertising policy that listed broadband speeds available to the premises. It found that broadband speeds were viewed by many as as important as factors like access to local amenities and off street parking. It was found to be of more importance than the proximity of a doctors surgery, for example.

Anyone who has their heart set on a property that struggles with slow broadband can get around the problem by opting for a leased line deal, which makes fast internet connection available to anyone.
