Better Broadband for Suffolk project to speed up internet access

A new programme has been rolled out to ensure that Suffolk businesses and residential properties will receive far faster broadband services by the end of this year.

In response to high demand from both corporate and individual customers, the Better Broadband for Suffolk programme has been rolled out earlier than initially planned in order to speed up internet services as soon as possible.

More than 1,500 local businesses and homes look set to benefit from the increased broadband speeds of at least 2 megabytes per second. Meanwhile, 85 per cent of customers will receive even faster broadband speeds of 24 megabytes per second.

Currently, surveys are being carried out in order for the new green fibre cabinets necessary for the super speed access to be connected. Rural locations which previously had to contend with slow broadband will also benefit from the changes, as the cabinets will allow faster services to reach many more rural areas.

Councillor Mark Bee, leader of Suffolk County Council’s and chair of the Better Broadband for Suffolk programme, told the Newmarket News: “Whilst the exact areas are still to be confirmed, they are most likely on the edge of existing fibre coverage areas and in more rural locations.

“The Better Broadband for Suffolk programme was set up to improve broadband access for everyone and this is the first, real, sign that things are taking shape,” Councillor Bee went on to say.

The implementation of the new high-speed broadband across Suffolk is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
