Report highlights UK's fastest and slowest broadband speeds

UK broadband speeds are fastest in the North East and North West, the South East and Northern Ireland, but users in Scotland, Wales and the East of England are struggling with the slowest network speeds, according to a study.

Users in Watford, Sutton and Cleveland enjoy broadband speeds around three times faster than those in Carlisle, Galashiels and Llandudno, the research carried out by the thinkbroadband website found.

The very best speeds of 19.8 mbps were found in Sutton, a London borough. It topped 118 areas tested during the summer, but Llandrindod Wells in Wales was bottom of the table with average download speeds of only 2.4mbps.

thinkbroadband’s Sebastien Lahtinen told the Daily Mail: “It is an extremely busy time for broadband in the UK, with criticism around the delayed rollout of superfast broadband, and the recent Government initiative to provide high speed connections for business in cities. It is still early days and there is long way to go until the four million target is reached.”

The report follows the findings of a study earlier this year which discovered that the speed broadband customers experience within the same city can vary massively depending on their location. The 4G research found that parts of Birmingham, London, Glasgow, Northampton and Bristol enjoyed great connectivity and speeds, but other locations within the same cities had to rely on much slower speeds.

The biggest differences were discovered in Birmingham, where average speeds of 20.9 mbps in the Hamstead, Great Barr and Perry Barr dipped by an alarming 89 per cent just a mile and a half away in Castle Vale, where broadband speeds averaged 2.2 mbps.

The report, which was based on more than 900,000 speed tests, also found that the fastest speeds were not necessarily within city centres where business users are concentrated.
