London 'lagging behind' Indian villages in internet speeds

According to research carried out by Fix Britain’s Internet, broadband speeds are slower in London than some villages in India. Whereas London has average speeds of 22.44 Mbps, Rani in Rajasthan has average speeds of 34.8Mbps.

The research found that cities in the UK are falling behind other countries in the world such as Bahamas, Costa Rica, and Poland. For example, broadband speeds in London are five times slower than rural Cosoba, Romania, which has speeds of up to 112Mbps.

Regarding superfast speeds, Belgian town Oudenaarde has come out on top with 202Mbps speeds, followed by Cosoba in Romania at 112.2Mbps. London and Manchester were ninth and tenth on the list respectively.
The study also found that six out of 10 British people have been let down by poor internet. Half of those surveyed said they would reconsider moving if the broadband speeds were slow in their new area.

When interviewed by the campaign, Karan Chadda, director of marketing consultancy firm Evolving Influence, said: “We’re heavily dependent on fast, reliable broadband. We regularly send and receive lots of videos, images and other large files. When visiting clients around the country, I’ve often been unable to download files or can only download them very slowly when working in nearby coffee shops.

“Worries about broadband quality shouldn’t be a factor when scheduling meetings with clients, but it’s a weekly occurrence, and something needs to change to bring Britain up to speed with the rest of the world.”

As a result, the campaign is urging the British government to fix the broadband speeds, so companies can compete on a global scale and is lobbying Ofcom to shake up the telecoms industry.
