UK broadband rollout is fastest in the world

More than 3.5 million homes have now been reached by the government's nationwide rollout of superfast broadband, according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

The progress makes the UK's broadband rollout the fastest in the world, with nine out of 10 homes and businesses now able to access superfast speeds - up from zero per cent in 2009.

In a press release, the DCMS confirmed it is on track to bring speeds of at least 24 Mbps to 4 million homes by Spring 2016, and 95 per cent of the population by the end of 2017.

On top of its commitment to bring superfast internet to the vast majority of Britain, the government has launched a number of initiatives to ensure even rural areas get access to speeds of at least 2Mbps. These include a new satellite voucher scheme, which aims to provide immediate assistance to those communities in the hardest to reach places.

In addition, the government has begun work on introducing a broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO). If successful, this will give people the legal right to request a connection to broadband with speeds of 10 Mbps, no matter where they live.

Commenting on the broadband rollout, Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey said: "Our rollout of superfast broadband is one of the biggest and most challenging infrastructure projects undertaken by Government in recent times.

"We need to keep the UK moving with the demands of the digital age, and our tremendous progress throughout 2015 has equipped businesses with the tools they need to grow, and homes with the technology to be part of our online global community."
