Superfast broadband finally comes to Loch Ness

Superfast broadband is finally due to arrived in the remote Scottish region of Loch Ness.

Over the coming months, more than 1,300 homes and businesses in the Loch Ness town of Drumnadrochit will gain access to superfast broadband after the government announced it was beginning the roll out of broadband infrastructure in the area.

Thanks to the fabled monster that lives in the water, Loch Ness has long been a key tourist destination for Scotland. But locals in Loch Ness previously warned that "slow or non-existent” broadband in the area was driving locals and tourists away.

The Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition, home to decades of multimedia records and research on the history of the famous loch, is one of the first local businesses to order the service.

An event was held on Thursday (1 October) to mark the start of the roll out, which has been 12 years in the making following an announcement that the region would be upgraded from its dial-up internet connections, Cable.co.uk reported.

The arrival of fibre services at Loch Ness forms part of the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband rollout, led in the area by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Scotland's deputy first minister John Swinney said: "It’s great to see superfast services coming through for Drumnadrochit and well ahead of the end of year timescale for the first Loch Ness communities.

“Every day we are connecting communities in Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes – supporting the Scottish Government’s commitment to deliver world class connectivity for Scotland by 2020.”

However, the HIE has stated that the roll out in Loch Ness will not reach everyone, and those who do gain access will have to go online to upgrade their services. The organisation said that there are some regions that are simply too remote or too dispersed to be connected.
