Half of workers 'willing to work from home' if internet is fast enough

Workers would happily work from home if they felt they could still perform their job to the same standard, according to research by Citrix.

The survey found that over half of workers (54 per cent) would not commute into London and would happily work from home if the internet speeds and transport links were to a similar level.

The survey found that 59 per cent of people were more confident of finding employment by living in a large city and cited lack of connectivity as one of the key reasons why they would rather commute.

The report while admitting that there is no current solution to the UK housing crisis, states that the results of the survey clearly show other avenues need to be pursued. Greater investment in technology, regarding infrastructure, has the potential to ease the issues currently facing the UK government.

Jacqueline de Rojas, area vice president for Northern Europe at Citrix, said: “With pressure mounting on the main cities and the urban population increasing, it is clear that the government and industry must look to intelligent solutions to relieve this problem. There is no good reason why career success and living rurally should remain mutually exclusive, and if we can bring to an end the necessary migration to the major cities for professional success, we have the potential to redistribute economic growth across the UK.”

The research comes on the back of a report released recently by the Institute of Directors (IoD) that called on the government to boost ambitions for broadband and that broadband speeds should be at least 1,000 times faster than the current recommendations to make sure that the UK stays competitive.

Matthew Evans, executive director at techUK, agreed with the report, saying: “Ensuring all workers and all businesses have the connectivity they need is an essential part of solving the productivity puzzle. Applying this connectivity to where people are – be it at home, in the office, or on a train – must remain an urgent priority for government and industry if we’re to retain our position as a world-leading digital economy.”
