Broadband speed tool released by Ofcom

A new tool has been released by broadband and telecoms regulator Ofcom in a bid to help consumers see what internet speeds and mobile reception they should typically receive in their area.

The tool called Mobile and Broadband Checker uses data tracking coverage, availability of broadband and speed information collected by Ofcom from all the major service providers and has never been available before in this format.

This new tool has come on the back of Ofcom's recent announcement of new rules aimed at helping consumers change internet providers if speeds are too slow and is seen by the chief executive of Ofcom Sharon White as a useful way of checking speeds and making sure you are paying for the speeds you requested.

The tool can also be used as evidence to make complaints to internet service providers if the speeds are unsatisfactory and claim compensation or requests to move to better services.

Sharon White, commenting on the tools release, said: “This interactive map is part of our work to arm people and businesses with high-quality, accessible information, helping them make informed decisions about their communications services.

"People and businesses can also investigate whether their existing broadband service is under performing, by comparing their connection speed against the average for neighbouring properties. This could provide useful evidence when contacting a provider with a service problem."

To use the tool, consumers have to enter their postcode which will then provide information on the area, including average broadband speeds and whether superfast internet connections are available. It also reports on the standard of mobile coverage and can check whether the area is covered by 3G or 4G network.
