Report claims that home working can boost morale

Allowing staff members to work remotely and from home can help to engage and motivate staff, according to the latest survey on the subject from Hays Recruitment.

The report found that 64 per cent of the employers questioned said that flexible and home working options motivate and engage staff members, while around a quarter said it also prevents staff from leaving, thus reducing staff turnover.

More than half the staff who were offered home working options said they were more productive when they worked from home, although 78 per cent said they were not offered a home working option.

The statistics show that more firms could offer home working and that they may reap the benefits providing they ensure their network is capable of supporting this kind of flexible working. Installing VoIP and other communication tools can help improve the working from home experience for staff, who still report missing contact with colleagues and the office environment when they work from home.

Hays regional managing director, Pam Lindsay-Dunn, said that many employers are now using flexible working as a way to motivate staff. Before the technology to facilitate home working was available, they would have previous had to rely on pay rises for motivation.

Ms Lindsay-Dunn added that it is good to have some rules laid down from the beginning to avoid problems: “Clear guidelines are needed to ensure that change in working patterns work for both parties. Employees must follow the same rules as those working in an office, including treating company information as confidential and keeping equipment and data safe.”
