Upgrading systems to include managed networks can help organisations to allow remote locations to access data and information held elsewhere.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology is currently finding out how useful this can be as it upgrades its networking capabilities to equip a number of stations with broadband IP communications.

By introducing a managed network through the use of hardware and bandwidth upgrades, the bureau will be able to respond to move, add and change requests to the bandwidth on demand, which will in turn allow the organisation to view and monitor network performance remotely, Computer World reported.

Crucially, the network will also allow staff at remote locations to make use of the internet and email systems, the bureau's intranet, Voice over Internet Protocol programs, and data link for on-site sensor equipment, such as radar and automatic weather stations. While some of this is clearly very niche to the weather sector, companies around the world can benefit from implementing managed networks to support their smaller offices and home workers.

Furthermore, fluctuations in bandwidth requirements can be easily accommodated by the network, meaning that unexpected events in the system can be handled efficiently, with minimal disruption to work during surges in capacity.

Earlier this month, Surrey County Council in England put out a tender for a managed network service to be shared between public sector organisations across the council and neighbouring Berkshire.

It is hoped that the shared managed network – which will be shared by health services, schools, education, police and fire services – will go some way to meeting the public sector's cost cutting targets without reducing service levels.

Slough Borough Council, West Berkshire Council, Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, Reading Borough Council, Wokingham Borough Council, and Bracknell Forest also look set to be included.
