A third of workers want flexible working over pay rise

A third of workers would take flexible working opportunities over a three per cent pay rise, a new study has found.

Researchers at Investors in People (IiP) asked respondents to choose between two options: a three per cent pay rise, in line with recent UK increases; or a different non-remuneration benefit, such as flexible working, better training or a clearer progression route.

A third (33 per cent) of respondents opted for a more flexible approach to working hours, while almost a third (28 per cent) chose a clearer career progression route, and a quarter (24 per cent) prioritised better training.

The results reflect a growing demand for more flexible working, including more opportunities remotely. A recent report by the Centre for the Modern Family found that 60 per cent of UK workers believe that flexible working will improve their work-life balance and boost productivity, yet only 34 per cent of employees currently work in an environment where such options are offered.

Commenting on the need for more flexible working options, Anita Frew, chair of the Centre for the Modern Family, urged employers to consider a new way of working.

“It’s time to rethink traditional ways of working and move towards a more agile approach. This will not only help employees forge a better work family balance, but to improve productivity, returning benefit to employers," she said. "Together, a new, relevant approach must be found to help restore our equilibrium."

With faster broadband connections making it possible for workers to set up an office almost anywhere, homeworking has become a popular option for many office-based staff. What's more, developments in cloud computing allows confidential information to be access securely off-site, making it both a practical and secure option too.
