Lack of cyber skills hitting businesses hard

Companies’ lack of cyber security skills means they’re struggling to detect, prevent and deal with cyber crime, a new research report suggests.

A study by Enterprise Strategy Group and the Information Systems Security Association found:

29 per cent of cyber security professionals think a global cyber security skills shortage has had a significant impact on their organisations.
More than half - 54 per cent - say this shortage has increased the workload on existing employees
32 per cent say it has led to high rates of staff attrition.
The same number say they are struggling for time to train staff in new cyber skills.

Commenting on the research, Jon Oltsik, principal analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, said in a post for Network World: “When asked about the cybersecurity skills shortage, I often say that this issue represents an existential threat. There are too few talented cyber security professionals available and those that are gainfully employed are often overworked, and spend little time on strategic planning or skills development.

“There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that this situation will improve. In fact, my fear is that new initiatives like cloud computing, digital transformation, and internet of things (IoT) applications will only increase the gap between cybersecurity skills supply and demand.”
