Half of firms 'can't fight cyber attacks'

Only half of British companies feel they have the capability to deal with a cyberattack, according to a new study conducted by CW Jobs.

Around 50 per cent of IT workers also feel as though they have not been correctly trained in cybersecurity, while only 23 per cent stated that they wouldn't be confident if they were expected to deal with the aftermath of a cyber attack.

The report also revealed that employers are failing to seek the right skills in their applicants, with only 50 per cent of employers stating that they specifically look for skills in cybersecurity when recruiting for new talent within their IT department.

These figures come despite the high number of major cyber attacks that have taken place in 2017, including the widespread attacks on the NHS, Uber and Equifax.

According to Dominic Harvey, director at CWJobs, it is vital that UK businesses push to keep pace with businesses around the world to ensure they are prepared for a cyber attack

Mr Harvey praised the government for beginning to take steps to tackle IT skills gaps in a bid to boost digital skills for both the current working generation and the next generation. These include plans to boost the number of computer science teachers in UK schools and the introduction of a national computing centre.

"It’s really encouraging to see the government listened to the concerns of the tech industry and responded by putting in plans to upskill the next generation of tech employees," Mr Harvey said.

"Now that we have a commitment from Government - and a clearer sense of where the skills are needed in areas like coding and cybersecurity - all parties can make a concerted effort to direct the new resources where they are needed most."
