Senior managers getting interested in the cloud

A new survey by Capgemini has found that cloud computing may allow businesses to shift the control of their business technology more towards managers and other senior staff as opposed to the IT department alone.

Some 45 per cent of the executives questioned in the survey said that desperate business units within their businesses are responsible for adopting cloud computing. This compared with just 32 per cent who said that their IT departments were the ones responsible for cloud strategies.

The survey spoke to 460 leaders in IT and exposed the fact that cloud computing is proving an interesting area for those not usually involved in business technology. Capgemini’s Ron Toledo explained, “The initiative for driving cloud solutions is shifting from the IT department to the business unit as companies focus more on tangible business value.”

Cloud computing was also found to be viewed very much as a new technology that is being brought on board to support exciting, new ‘cutting edge’ areas of business, according to 78 per cent of those questioned.

Despite the move towards other managers getting involved in cloud computing adoption, businesses still rely on their IT department to make it all happen according to an article by Forbes, based on the Capgemini research. But the growing interest among senior managers from all department, on the benefits cloud computing could offer them, is a step in the right direction.

Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
