Organisations lack infrastructure for cloud move

The majority of organisations are lacking the required infrastructure to make a successful switch to cloud computing.

This is according to a recent report conducted by Computacenter, which revealed that most companies are in the process of establishing the systems required for cloud computing and very few are actually at the point of being 'cloud-ready'.

However, the state of preparation was shown to vary significantly with around a fifth of groups found to be making full use of cloud computing and virtualisation, while a similar percentage had no form of virtualisation in place at all.

Around 28 per cent of those questioned were found to be planning to migrate their workloads to the cloud this year and 72 per cent were shown to be testing some projects around functions like email in order to assess their systems.

Andrew Vize, propositions and strategy director with the firm, remarked: “Most organisations do view cloud computing as a major focus for their business, but many corporate infrastructures are simply not ready – nor may they ever be – for a full-scale switch to cloud computing.”

He added: “The majority of companies are still focused on becoming 'cloud-ready' and virtualising infrastructure, ensuring that systems are prepared for cloud before making the leap.”

However, Mr Vize did note that companies and IT managers are now starting to approach the cloud with “due diligence” and caution. They have a better understanding of the benefits and the risks and are taking the time to make sure that they deliver “well thought-out, productive and effective cloud uses”.
