New research has revealed that an increasing number of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are realising the benefits of cloud computing.

The research, which was carried out by nonprofit social enterprise TechSoup Global, found that a majority of NGOs are planning to move their IT systems over to the cloud in the near future.

The ‘2012 Global Cloud Computing Survey’ questioned 10,500 charities, nonprofits and NGOs from 88 countries around the globe on the barriers to and the motivators of cloud computing.

It found that, while many NGOs are keen on the cloud computing concept, many feel that they need more support and education about the topic in order to switch over to it successfully. Some of the key areas in which more education is needed was collaboration, productivity and costs of successfully switching to the cloud.

The report is the most extensive technology survey that has ever been carried out relating to NGOs across the globe. It also found that many NGOs were not even aware that certain aspects of their IT systems had already been switched to the cloud, or were not aware of the full range of cloud computing applications and processes that they could be making use of.

TechSoup Global co-CEO Rebecca Masisak told the Herald Online, “TechSoup Global is thrilled to better understand how and why cloud computing can rapidly advance the causes of every social benefit organization in all parts of the world.

“By sharing the voices of NGOs with the sector as a whole, this survey will allow us to better use cloud computing to improve organizations’ effectiveness, collaboration, and access to data,” Ms Masisak added.
