Joyent launches public cloud computing service
A public cloud computing service to rival that of Amazon's Web Services has been launched by cloud software and services provider Joyent.
The new service claims to beat the Amazon offering in both performance and reliability and, as competition within the market increases, could prompt more firms to consider adopting the cloud for themselves.
Among those to have already adopted the cloud from Joyent are LinkedIn, Kabam, StackMob and Gilt Group. These firms are able to enjoy the instantly scalable options that come with public cloud computing, and also benefit from one of the fastest running times available with Joyent.
In fact, the service is up to 14 times as fast as Amazon EC2 machine instances and also provides instant CPU bursting and intelligent data caching. The CPU bursting capability, which can reach up to 400 per cent, allows applications to easily absorb abrupt spikes in usage without impacting the performance of the application or the experience of the user.
However, it is the ease of scalability that is drawing many companies to the cloud and, with more cloud providers entering the market, firms are likely to see the price of this facility become far more competitive.
Steve Tuck, general manager of Joyent Cloud, commented on the product launch: “Joyent Cloud provides customers with peace of mind that their infrastructure will just work, just scale, and be fully visible and transparent at all times.
“We eliminate the compromises inherent in running on other clouds while delivering exceptional performance and speed at a competitive price," he added.
Companies keen to take advantage of the services on offer from Joyent, Amazon and other public cloud providers would do well to check their own infrastructure and networks before embarking on a new system of IT provision. Doing so will ensure that customers get the best service possible from the cloud, reducing the number of delays and problems to a minimum.
