Dell to launch in public cloud market

Dell is to turn its hand to cloud computing, according to an announcement from the company at this week's VMworld 2011.

The company confirmed at the Las Vegas conference that it is to enter the public cloud market, noting that it is to provide Infrastructure-as-a-Service through hosting in its data centres. Among the services on offer are memory, storage networks, virtual CPUs, IP addresses and firewalls.

Dell is entering into the arena in partnership with VMware, using the vCloud Datacenter Services of the company to develop the offering.

Scott Aronson, senior vice-president of global channels and alliances at VMware, commented on the news, saying, “Our expanded partnership will enable enterprises to improve efficiency and agility by leveraging internal and external resources in a compatible, compliant and flexible manner, based on a common architecture developed and certified together by VMware and Dell.”

He added that the service is set to deliver multiple IT services options across the public, private and hybrid cloud solutions. Indeed, Dell has previously announced a private cloud offering, designed to build private clouds for customers with their own data centres or those who want a private space without Dell's data centres. Once again, these will be built using VMware products, such as vSphere, vCloud Director and Dell's vStart.

The news follows the launch of VMware's own server virtualisation stack, vSphere 5.0. The company approached the creation of the service with significant attention to detail, devoting thousands of programming hours and quality tests to ensure that it would run smoothly on more than 2,000 different hardware and software products in use by its partners and deliver a reliable service to end-users.

However, companies looking to cloud computing for their IT services will need to check that their own networks are up to the job before they make the switch.
