Cloud sprawl causing businesses problems

The growing tendency to ‘cloud sprawl’ is causing businesses significant difficulties and inefficiencies, according to new research.

Market researcher Vanson Bourne surveyed 750 IT decision-makers from the US, UK, Germany, China, France, Sweden, Brazil, Japan and Australia on behalf of Avanade, a business technology consultancy firm. The results found that ‘cloud sprawl – the growing use of a wide variety of unsanctioned cloud services – is disrupting businesses.

The findings of the survey revealed that 61 per cent of the companies asked said that the cloud sprawl trend was responsible for inefficiencies within their business. While in the UK this number is lower (just 52 per cent), across the board it is even high among companies that deploy both private and public cloud solutions (71 per cent).

The problem is caused by individuals or departments within a business using different cloud services to the ones that are chosen by the IT departments. This results in an ever-growing list of different cloud-based software and platforms being deployed across the company, often meaning that collaboration is stunted, in turn causing inefficiency.

Of the 750 senior personnel asked, two thirds (66 per cent) stated that they had noticed this problem – the number is higher in the UK though, at 69 per cent.

Commenting on the findings, Mark Corley, CTO at Avanade UK, said: “The study reinforces what we're seeing in the UK market about the challenges of cloud computing. Whilst the cloud can deliver significant benefits, some of its advantages also introduce risk. Unmanaged cloud sprawl is introducing risk with threats from unmanaged sources.”

Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network. hSo provides managed networks designed for business.
