Cloud computing could prove to have as big an impact on businesses as the creation of computing itself, a new report has claimed.

According to a study by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the cloud could prove as disruptive as data processing on business practices. The work states that far from merely replacing older computer platforms, cloud computing is transforming the way businesses deploy and engage with IT.

The fact that cloud technology has established itself as a mainstay in the technology world is indisputable. However, the EIU believes the true, lasting revolutionary impact of the cloud will change the face of business altogether.

The research states: “The growing use of cloud will continue to disrupt markets, spawn new business models and revolutionise information sharing and business management for years to come.” The report, entitled ‘The Impact of Cloud’, goes on to say that the cloud is already creating “huge waves”, both in the business arena and in people’s everyday lives.

With more people using smartphones or tablets, there has been a growing use of cloud storage and file sharing tools so that the public can access applications or important information – whether for work purposes or private – wherever they might be.

For businesses, because it provides affordable access to vast amounts of storage and compute power, as well easy-to-deploy software, the cloud opens up huge potential to transform the way they operate.

Contributors to the analysis include Professor Ian Bitterlin of the Green Grid Association, Dr Jonathan Liebenau of London School of Economics, Reed technology director Mark Ridley, Dr James Mitchell of Strategic Blue and Dr Tua Huomo of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. The academics claim that “the impact of cloud computing has barely begun”.

They warn: “Executives should also pay close attention to how cloud computing is enabling new business models, transforming business process, changing market dynamics and, in some cases, creating new markets together… It is here that the true revolutionary impact lies.”

Businesses looking to move services into the cloud should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network. hSo provides managed networks designed for business.
