Cloud computing uptake to double by 2015

A new study by IBM has found that business leaders expect the number of firms using cloud computing to increase two-fold within three years.

The survey, the results of which were released at IBM’s Pulse 2012 conference, concluded that those firms that do opt to adopt cloud technologies will be better equipped to introduce new products and services in the years between now and 2015. The appetite for new streams of revenue will lead to the use of cloud computing doubling in those years, according to the research.

Saul Berman, IBM’s global strategy consulting leader, said, "Companies are starting to understand — cloud isn't just about gaining efficiencies and cost savings, it's about driving the kind of fundamental innovation that provides lasting marketplace advantage.”

This very positive outlook for the proliferation of cloud services comes despite the fact that the survey found that only 16 per cent of the executives questioned said they were already using cloud computing to make major innovations to their business models. However, 35 per cent of them said that by 2015 they will be using the cloud in this way.

When asked about their objectives for adopting the cloud, the top answer, given by 62 per cent said it was down to working more with external partners. While the second most popular answer, given by 57 per cent, was cost savings through vertical integration.

One of the examples that demonstrates the way in which cloud computing can transform businesses, is an online marketplace selling handmade goods, which uses the cloud to analyse a billion monthly views, helping it to create recommended products for its users. This kind of system, before cloud computing, would have only been affordable for large retailers, claims IBM.

Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
