CIOs & IT managers embrace the hybrid cloud

Chief information officers and IT managers are adopting hybrid cloud models as they look to use a combination of public and private cloud solutions to manage their operations, according to a new report.

A poll of 750 CIOs and IT experts in the UK, France and Germany found that enhanced security is the main motivation for adoption, with more than 50 per cent of respondents in each country saying they use the hybrid cloud.

69 per cent of CIOs and IT managers in Germany are using hybrid cloud services, followed by 61 per cent in France and 58 per cent in the UK, the survey by NetApp found.

When it comes to the types of cloud supplier companies look to work with, local service providers are the most popular (26 per cent), followed by larger cloud service providers (18 per cent) and global system integrators (17 per cent).

Some 56 per cent of respondents cited security as the key motivation for cloud adoptions, ahead of flexibility (55 per cent) and cost savings (54 per cent).

When asked about workloads, 60 per cent of German respondents cited file storage, compared with 56 per cent for the UK and 53 per cent for France. Other workloads were also mentioned, including remote working, collaboration tools, analysis and disaster recovery.

“Enterprises need to be able to choose which workloads belong in the cloud and choose the best partners to move them across a hybrid landscape,” said NetApp’s Martin Warren.

“They need to have visibility into cost, performance and data placement to make informed business and regulatory decisions across the full data lifecycle. And they want to harness every advantage of cloud economics – from new ideas to concepts to production.”
