Amazon launches additional cloud computing services

Amazon has announced the global roll-out of its Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), along with new enterprise capabilities for dedicated networking and identity management.

The VPC is now available in multiple areas, including the EU, much of the US, Singapore and Tokyo, allowing users to make use of a private section of the cloud in which they can create a virtual network and take control. Using encrypted VPN connections, the network can be connected direct to the internet, while also allowing the extension of a corporate data centre to the cloud.

Amazon also launched its Direct Connect service this week, allowing people to bypass the internet and deliver data to and from Amazon Web Services (AWS) through a private network connection. A good business connection - through a leased line, for example - can be especially important in this situation, reducing networking latency and costs, while providing a more consistent network.

The service could also help companies to take control of their costs when it comes to dealing with remote data. The ‘pay as you go’ pricing option means that enterprises only pay for the network ports used and the data transferred out from AWS through the connection, while data transferred into AWS is free of charge.

One customer who has already benefited from Amazon’s new cloud options is 20th Century Fox. John Herbert, executive vice-president of the entertainment company, remarked: “By constantly releasing new services tailored for the global enterprise, AWS enables us to move more of our business into the cloud.”

He added: “We look forward to extending our enterprise capabilities with AWS Direct Connect, so that AWS can really be the 'cost-avoidance, virtual data centre in our future.”

Meanwhile, Scott Johnson, vice-president of Enterprise Engineering at the InterContinental Hotel Group, noted that the availability of AWS in multiple regions, increases the flexibility of cloud services for an international company targeting markets around the world.
