Life sciences firm uses AWS to support clinical trials

Life sciences company uMotif aims for a patient-centric approach to research, building data capture solutions, such as the uMotif eClinical platform, that are designed with patients and for patients. This platform is used in clinical research covering all therapeutic areas, with uMotif applications used for tracking and submission of e-consent, symptom, eCOA, ePRO, as well as wearable device data.

A struggle for many life sciences companies involved in clinical trials is keeping patients engaged with submitting their data regularly and securely. If patients drop out of trials, or submit data inaccurately, this can be costly and impact the timeline of trials.

In order to support its clinical trial patients, as well as investigators, sponsors and research organisations, uMotif built its easy-to-use cloud-based platform. This robust, compliant system makes it easier for patients to submit and capture data.

uMotif CEO Bruce Hellman says: “It’s hugely exciting “using new technology and putting patients more at the heart of clinical research helps researchers collect larger volumes of high-quality data. Our secure and compliant app can be downloaded on a patient’s own device meaning they can enter data virtually. This removes the burden, and potential bias in the data, of visiting a site as well being able to reach new patient populations in remote locations.”

Building on Amazon Web Services (AWS) enables uMotif’s platform to easily scale from small scale studies, to research involving tens of thousands of patients and with wide geographical coverage across millions of data points.

The AWS infrastructure allows for rapid compute capacity deployment when traffic increases, whilst also enabling integration with other eClinical solutions. API endpoints, meanwhile, are protected by Amazon Web Application Firewall. Furthermore, global hosting and translation tools, combined with the easy-to-use interface and cloud infrastructure mean that the platform can be deployed worldwide.

Hellman says: “Using AWS allows us to deploy fast and scale quickly when traffic increases and enables us to configure and deploy studies consistently and securely. Working in life sciences, it’s critical that our platform is secure and audit-ready at any time.”
